Position Summary:

Promotes the maintenance of a safe, accident free and healthy work environment at the assigned work location.

Safety a Way of Life (SAWOL) Personal Leadership Competencies

The ability to facilitate and implement Safety A Way of Life Management Systems.
Be responsible for the administration of the process to include establishing meeting schedules, serving as the Secretary of the Mine Safety & Health team, providing safety statistics and reviewing and evaluating employee performance to recognize individuals who may be candidates for the specific training

Key Responsibilities

Manager must facilitate risk register activities and management of change exercises.
Ensures safety standards and procedures are followed by all mine personnel in compliance with company, state, and federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rules and regulations.
Works with management to understand and properly implement all [Company] standards and procedures.
Consults with all departments on the proper safe use of all surface equipment, fire prevention methods and safety practices including drug and alcohol program.
Acts as a resource for employees who have questions or concerns about standards or procedures in the areas of safety.
Acts as mine rescue coordinator to establish team coverage and training as required.
Inspects the mine property to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, and recommends corrective or preventative measures where needed.
Keeps managers and employees alerted as to the hazards of working with toxic fumes, dangerous chemicals, and any other hazardous substances. Coordinates the use of personal protective equipment.
Participates in the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for use in hearings, law suites, and insurance investigations.
Compiles and submits accident reports required by regulatory agencies and company policy.
Oversees the administration of workers’ compensation program, including working with the insurance carrier to cut down on lost employee time and cut back on unjust claims.
Oversees first aid equipment and emergency preparedness.
Devises, supervises, and coordinates training programs which will increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety consciousness as well as complies with state & federal laws.
Escorts and consults with state and federal mine inspectors and assists in addressing any issues.
Must be a resource to the mine personnel on compliance issues and help develop mine plans to be submitted to state and federal.
Maintains safety files and employee records required by company policy.
Makes studies and analyses of mine accident causes and hazards to health for use by all mine personnel and outside agencies.
Other job duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum: two (2) years’ experience as a Safety Supervisor or in a safety-related field and a minimum of four (4) years surface coal mining experience with a thorough knowledge of state and federal mining regulations .
Preferred: BS degree in mining or safety, CMSP and / or CSP


Individual must be certified or have the ability to become certified within 6 months in the following:
Surface Mine Foreman; Oxygen & Methane; Noise Level Testing; Respirable Dust Sampling; and MSHA Certified Instructor
Valid Driver’s License
High school diploma or equivalent
